Sligo can turn it round -- Cook

Sligo Rovers 0 Monaghan UTd 0

Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook has backed his players to ride out a tough period and finish the season strongly.

Rovers have found wins hard to come by in August and they were knocked out of the EA Sports Cup last Tuesday, before being held to a scoreless draw by First Division Monaghan United at the Showgrounds on Saturday night.

However, Cook was proud of the efforts of his players, especially after the 61st-minute sending-off of goalkeeper Brendan Clarke.

He said: "Our lads are going through one of those periods that all teams go through. We are not really firing but we are showing great character."

Clarke was given a straight red card for halting the attack of Monaghan striker Michael Isichei in the second half, and will miss the replay in Gortakeegan tomorrow.

Monaghan midfielder Keith Quinn was also given his marching orders following an off-the-ball clash with Richie Ryan.

Sligo created a host of late chances, with Eoin Doyle, Joseph Ndo and Matthew Blinkhorn all denied by the woodwork in the last 10 minutes.

Monaghan United -- Sava, A Collins, Byrne, Grimes, Reilly, R Brennan, Foley, Quinn, S Brennan (Byrne 90+4), Marks, Isichei.
