Rooney mark two may invoke Irish 'granny rule'

WAYNE ROONEY'S brother John could become the latest in a long line of English-born players to declare for Ireland.

Reports emerged yesterday that the 17-year-old Macclesfield midfielder is ready to opt for the Republic and Sean McCaffrey's youth set up.

Like his older brother, John was also on Everton's books before he was released as a 14-year-old.

Rooney was then snapped up by Macclesfield where he made his first team debut for the League one side in their 3-0 win over Barnet on Monday.

Should Rooney declare for the Republic, he could find himself in the squad that plays in the UEFA Under-17 finals in Turkey in May.
