Rock star of show for Sheriff posse

AVONDALE UNITED 1, SHERIFF YC 2

A SECOND-half double from John Rock saw Sheriff YC come out on top at Avondale Park.

In a clash between the FAI Junior Cup winners and the FAI Intermediate Cup kingpins, it was Sheriff who deservedly advanced as they inflicted a first defeat of the season on a tired Avondale.

Avondale started the brighter and Sheriff 'keeper Lee Murphy had to be alert to save from Mark O'Sullivan before Danny Long's looping header from the resulting corner clipped the top of the bar.

That was as good as it got for the home side as Sheriff began to boss possession and the excellent Darren Dunne went close before Rock struck for the opener on 70 minutes. A mix-up between Dave O'Keeffe and Mark Horgan resulted in Horgan bringing down Keith Dunne and Rock sent O'Keeffe the wrong way from the spot.

Danny Long was close to an equaliser before Rock made the game safe when he headed home Sean Murphy's cross on 85 minutes. Graham McCarthy got a consolation for the Cork side in injury-time.
