Being picked despite admitting lack ofmatch fitness.

What he said:

"That's the manager's choice at the end of the day. You have to ask the manager. All I can say is that I'm excited and really looking forward to the game."

What he meant:

I couldn't really kick up a strop about not playing considering I didn't have any matches under my belt. Or could I?

The faith shown in him

by his manager

What he said:

"Of course that's important. Every player wants to play for their country, I'm no different. Just because you're the captain it doesn't mean you play every game or have right to play every game. You have to earn your spot."

What he meant:

Apologies Il Trap for even daring to question your authority and threatening to do a runner. Won't happen again. Honest.

What he said:

"I've no intention, I'll make it clear -- I've no intention to retire at all. I want to play as long as I can. I think you've seen over years, I've always been committed.

"I always wanted to play for my country. That is never going to change."

What he meant:

If Kevin Kilbane can keep going, so can I!

Threatening to walk

away if not picked

What he said:

"I've said to you on numerous occasions that I'll be happy enough if someone young took my place, I'd be happy enough to walk away, I've had a tremendous career. I'm sure you'll agree that I've said that. So whether it was picked up completely wrong, I'm not sure."

What he meant:

Of course I was misquoted! Any wonder I hate the media!

Threatening to walk

away if ... erm ... not

picked this time

What he said:

"That would be different circumstances because I've been out for a while ... if someone else played, it's something I have to accept. I'd have to expect that and accept it.

"If I was playing every week at club level and then came in, that's a different scenario."

What he meant:

I'll walk away if I'm not picked!
