The lads behind the most famous set of flags to emerge from Euro 2016 are back - and their friend Tom is missing in action, as usual.

Tom Fitzgibbon's pals Daniel Hegarty, Darren McNamara and Aaron Ryan made up a set of Irish tricolours with his face on it which read: "This is Tom. He isn't here cas [sic] he got a new gf."

Underneath it says: "Don't be like Tom.”

They made a second tricolour featuring his girlfriend Emma O'Leary's picture with the accompanying words: “There she is. Err...we would too.”

The hilarious banners became an internet sensation when Independent.ie carried pictures of them and an hilarious interview with pals Daniel, Darren and Aaron in Paris last year.

At the Ireland v Austria game at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday evening, the practically famous lads told independent.ie that they may not see Tom at a game again. As 22-year-old Aaron said: "Ah sure, what’s new?"

"The dream is over there. Good man down, good man down. I’d say there’s a ring due there but sure we won’t…," 28-year-old Daniel said.

"We’re not going to put pressure on him now but there’s a ring due there. There’s a good man lost I’d say."

When the "free" boys came back from the Euros last year, their flags took pride of place above McCarthy's bar in the centre of Buttevant, North Cork.

"It was wild there for a while. We got back and everyone was wrecking our heads but sure. Twas a bit of craic," he said.

"Everyone except Tom, sure Tom wouldn’t talk to us but sure that was ideal. That suited us down to the ground. We didn’t want to talk to him anyway."

And can Irish supporters expect to see any more flags?

"We will wait til Russia, we will roll it out in Russia," said Daniel.

"No doubt about it we will be there and we will roll it out in Russia."
