George Boyd, the Peterborough captain, could be a surprise target for Tottenham in the January window.

Manager Harry Redknapp has insisted he is unlikely to make a move in the window, but it is understood that Tottenham have followed the rapid success of Boyd.

He led Peterborough on Saturday in the 4-0 FA Cup defeat at White Hart Lane. But his progress since joining Peterborough from non-league football has attracted top clubs and the man dubbed the ‘White Pele’ by Stevenage fans is still only 24.

Boyd cost Peterborough £260,000, then a non-league record, and has seen the club win successive promotions.

He is also a Scottish B international after proving that his maternal grandfather was born in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans urged Redknapp to move for another Peterborough player. Although he conceded four goals, goalkeeper Joe Lewis impressed and was buoyed by chants of ‘Tottenham’s No 2’ after three excellent saves in two minutes.

Redknapp needs cover for first-choice Heurelho Gomes and Lewis said: “It was pleasing to hear.

“When you are playing well it’s nice to know that the people watching are recognising that.

“I must admit, though, you don’t often hear opposing fans singing your praises. I’ve just got to keep playing well and whatever happens. Every footballer wants to play in the Premier League - it’s the place to be - and I’m no different.

“If a Premier League club came in, it would be a difficult one to turn down but, on the other hand, you want to be playing week in, week out. It would be a decision I’d have to make if it came along."
