From a first-half stroll, Limerick were made to work for this result as a three-goal lead was reeled in, before their west Dublin pursuers ran out of steam.

A Sean Brosnan brace for the Shannonsiders paved the way to fourth round passage. The striker cut in from the right on 22 minutes to give Ken Deegan in the 'Heart goal no chance with a rasping effort that took a deflection off Ger Wrafter.

Brosnan bagged number two in the 40th minute with a powerful header before his provider Sean O'Connor made it three on the stroke of half-time with a clinical long-range drive.

Anthony Weafer provided 'Heart with some hope four minutes into the second half when he turned in Darren Goode's cross.

Hope turned to real optimism in the 57th when Ian Lowry complemented a deft pass from Paul Caffrey with an exquisite finish.

Limerick nullified 'Heart's threat on 85 minutes, Padraig Quinn picking his spot after a goal-line clearance.
