Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was quick to recall Will Keane from his loan spell at Preston when the transfer window opened - and he has staked a claim to make first team return in his first game back in a red shirt.

Van Gaal may have forgotten Keane's first name as he called him Michael in his press conference last week, but he will have been impressed by his talents as the 23-year-old forward scored a hat-trick for the United under-21 side against Reading.

With goals in short supply for United this season, Keane could get a chance to push for a role in Van Gaal's plans if the club fail to make signings in the next few weeks and he certainly seems to be in good scoring form.

Firing home two penalties and scoring a fortunate second goal as well, United fans will be keen to see if he can convert this scoring form to the Premier League stage.

There were suggestions that winger Adnan Januzaj may be making his first appearance for United since returning to the club following an unsuccessful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, but the Belgian international was not on the team-sheet.

Januzaj could now push to be involved in United's games in the coming weeks, with Tuesday's game against Newcastle followed by a heavyweight clash against Liverpool at Anfield this Sunday.
