Wayne Rooney tweets a tribute to Steven Gerrard...and the abuse flows

Wayne Rooney has come under fire from Manchester United fans on Twitter after posting a heartfelt message of praise to his former England team-mate Steven Gerrard.

United fans on social media channels relish any chance to poke fun at former Liverpool skipper Gerrard and they were quick to post a stream of abuse on Rooney’s Twitter timeline after he offered up a message that read: One of the best I've played with. One of the best I've played against. One of the best there has ever been. Enjoy your retirement mate.

The response was predictably toxic, even though the thousands of retweets and likes suggested many agreed with his warm sentiments. 

This was the message the sparked a huge response from United supporters and while some of the replies were respectful, many were not:
