Louis van Gaal says he will know his Manchester United reign is on the right track when his team receive a glowing endorsement from Alex Ferguson.

United's back-to-back wins over Tottenham and Liverpool have been well received by several Old Trafford legends but, while the Dutch coach was delighted to receive praise, he said recognition from Ferguson would be a greater sign of the team's progress.

"The comments of legends are always important. It's nice. But, if Ferguson says that, I am more proud because as a manager he can judge what is the achievement much better than ex-players," said Van Gaal.

United face Aston Villa today seeking to consolidate their Champions League place and also with ambitions to catch Manchester City in second position.

"First, we have to concentrate on Aston Villa," said the manager. "It is better to be second or third. I would be pleased with fourth, but I want to be first. We can still win the title, mathematically. We still have to play against the top three, so a lot can happen."
