Premier League

Tuncay earns share for Stoke

Wednesday February 10 2010

STOKE CITY produced a battling second-half performance to earn a point at the DW Stadium last night.

Tuncay proved to be the saviour when he netted the leveller in the 74th minute.

Wigan opened strongly and Jason Scotland had a good chance in the 10th minute having been fed by James McCarthy.

Four minutes later the home side were ahead.

Matthew Etherington was booked for obstructing Charles N'Zogbia midway into the Stoke half and the Frenchman sent a beautiful delivery into the box from the free-kick, which Paul Scharner headed past the diving Thomas Sorenson.

But Stoke applied some pressure around the half-hour mark, with Etherington's free-kick causing a goalmouth scramble which was cleared away before Glenn Whelan sent a speculative effort over the crossbar.

But as the half drew to an end, Wigan went close to extending their advantage, Scharner managing to flick N'Zogbia's corner towards goal from six yards out, but the midfielder was leaning back too much to guide it on target.

Stoke came out for the second half looking determined to pick up the tempo and Tuncay wasted an opportunity to equalise, miscuing a volley from close range after Robert Huth had nodded down for him. He made up for the miss in the 74th minute, however, with his headed equaliser from Etherington's cross.
