Angry exchanges have taken place between players and staff at Newcastle United's training ground this week while head coach Steve McClaren is furious with the attitude of some of his senior players.

McClaren was incensed by the timid manner in which Newcastle capitulated in their 3-0 home defeat against Leicester last weekend and he has told some home truths to several in the squad in an effort to provoke a response against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Having told his players what he thought of their performance in the dressing room after the Leicester game, McClaren was not impressed with the reaction on the training pitch and neither were his staff, who've challenged those who do not seem be concerned by the team's plight.

That has led to clashes with key personnel and the arguments, which happened in front of team-mates, have been described as heated.

McClaren felt personally let down by the Leicester defeat, which brought back bitter memories for fans of other humiliating surrenders under previous managers Alan Pardew and John Carver. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
