Mesut Ozil has confirmed that his advisers are set to re-open contract talks with Arsenal over a new deal, as he eyes up a prized jersey that suggests he is keen to stay at the club for the long-haul.
Arsenal’s failure to find agreement with Ozil over a deal to extend his current contract that expires in the summer of 2018 has sparked speculation that he could be eyeing a move away from Arsenal.
Reports have claimed that Ozil was unhappy with Arsenal’s lack of ambition in the transfer market, but it seems he is open to the prospect of staying at the north London club, even if he was non-committal in these comments to the German media.
“I have a contract until 2018,” Ozil told German publication Express. “We have had discussions, but they were suspended for the European Championship.
“I wanted to focus at this time only on the national team. Now we look to continue the negotiations.”
The fact that Ozil and his management team are ready to talk once more with Arsenal officials over a new deal will raise hopes that the German World Cup winner will stay with the club and he is also keen to cement his Gunners legacy by snatching the club’s iconic No.10 jersey.
Jack Wilshere recently vacated a shirt that is generally owned by the star player at a club and Ozil has admitted he has his eye on claiming that prestigious shirt.
“It just went free, and I definitely want it,” he added of the No.10 shirt.
“I wanted the number for years but so did Lukas Podolski. He got to keep it because he had more caps than I did. Now I’ve pounced. The number fits me and my position: playmaker.”
