England goalkeeper Jack Butland signed for Stoke City last night in a £4m deal.
The 19-year-old turned down a move to Chelsea last week because the European champions could not offer him first-team football. However, a crucial aspect of his switch to the Britannia Stadium is that he will be immediately loaned back to Birmingham City for the rest of the season.
The Championship club needed to sell during the January transfer window to ease their mounting financial problems and there had been interest in the England man from Manchester City, Southampton and Everton.
Butland, however, has opted for Stoke, which raises questions over the future of Asmir Begovic.
Liverpool and Manchester United could both now make a move for the 25-year-old goalkeeper in the summer.
