Jonjo Shelvey said he "drove through the night" from Swansea to join Newcastle yesterday and his trip was successful as he signed a five-and-a-half-year deal after the Welsh club agreed to sell him to their relegation rivals for £12m.

The 23-year-old midfielder added: "It's been a manic 24 hours but it's all been worth it to come here and play for this great club. I'm very excited to be here. I'm so glad that it's finally done."

Shelvey, who has six England caps, is Newcastle's second signing in 24 hours after the arrival of midfielder Henri Saivet from Bordeaux on Monday, also on a long-term deal and for a £5m fee.

The Newcastle manager, Steve McClaren said: "He (Shelvey) is a player we have admired for some time and we're very pleased that we've now been able to bring him here."
