Seventh heaven – Di Maria handed iconic number 7 jersey at Old Trafford

Angel Di Maria will take the currently unoccupied number seven jersey after completing his £60m move to Manchester United.

The player is expected to be unveiled officially tomorrow or Thursday and is likely to be in contention to make his debut against Burnley at the weekend following his transfer from Real Madrid.

Di Maria will follow in the footsteps of George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo after taking the vacant number in the squad and is already being stocked in a number of sports retail outlets.

Antonio Valencia was the last player to hold the number, but the Ecuadorian asked for a numerical change, citing increased pressure associated with the number seven.

Juan Mata was expected to claim the jersey after his January transfer last season, but surprisingly took the number eight jersey from midfielder Anderson.
