WEST Brom midfielder Paul Scharner struck at the death to extend Newcastle's winless Premier League run to six games in a five-goal thriller.
The Austrian stabbed home the winner five minutes from time just when it looked as thought Demba Ba has rescued a point for the home side with an 81st-minute equaliser.
Peter Odemwingie had opened the scoring with 20 minutes gone, but Ba cancelled out his strike with a 34th-minute free-kick before Gareth McAuley restored the visitors' lead a minute before the break.
Despite having numerous chances to equalise, Newcastle just couldn't get past a stubborn West Brom defence and the home fans were growing increasingly restless.
The Magpies looked to have redeemed themselves with nine minutes left on the clock. Ba chested the ball down to Ben Arfa, who returned the favour with a neat pass which the striker dispatched with venom to take his tally to 13 for the season.
But it was Scharner who had the final word with five minutes remaining when he stabbed home to snatch victory.
