Red and green connections

Paul McGrath: Born in Ealing, London. Raised in Dublin. Signed by Ron Atkinson from St Patrick's Athletic in 1982. Debut November 10, 1982 v Bradford City (League Cup). 199 appearances, seven as sub. 16 goals. Played 69 times with four substitute appearances for Ferguson. Joined Aston Villa in summer 1989. FA Cup medal 1985.



Kevin Moran

Won All-Ireland football medals with the Dubs in 1976 and '77 before signing with United in 1978. Debut April 30, 1979 v Southampton (league). 289 appearances, five as sub. 24 goals. Sent off in 1985 FA Cup final won by United. Played 50 times with two substitute appearances for Ferguson. Left club for Sporting Gijon in 1988. FA Cup medals 1983, '85.

Frank Stapleton

The Dubliner was bought from Arsenal for a then record £900,000 in 1981. Debut v Coventry City (league) August 29, 1981. Appearances 288, 21 as sub. Goals 78. Played 14 times with eight substitute appearances for Ferguson. Left United for Ajax in July 1987. FA Cup medals 1983, '85.

Liam O'Brien

Born in Dublin. Signed from Shamrock Rovers in 1986 for an initial £50,000 -- he was Ron Atkinson's last signing for United. Debut December 20, 1986. 36 appearances, 19 as sub under Ferguson. 2 goals. Left club for Newcastle United in 1988.

Denis Irwin

The Corkman joined United in June 1990 from Oldham for £625,000. Debut August 25, 1990 v Coventry City (league). 529 appearances, 18 as sub. 33 goals. Transferred to Wolves in 2002. European Cup Winners Cup medal (1991), Champions League winner 1999, seven Premier League medals (1993, '94, '96, '97, '99, 2000, '01), three FA Cups (1994, '96, '99), one League Cup (1992).

Roy Keane

Signed by Ferguson from Notts Forest for a then record £3.75m in July 1993. Debut v Arsenal in Charity Shield August 7, 1993. 480 appearances, 22 as sub. 51 goals. Made club captain in 1997. Left in November 2005 and joined Celtic. Seven Premierships (1994, '96, '97, '99, 2000, '01, '03), four FA Cup medals (1994, '96, '99, 2004). Footballer of the Year and Players Player of the Year in 2000.

John O'Shea

Waterford-born star joined United as schoolboy. Debut October 13 1999 v Aston Villa (League Cup). 393 appearances, 91 as sub. Left United for Sunderland last summer. Champions League winner 2008; 5 Premier Leagues (2003, '07,' 08, '09, '11), 1 FA Cup (2004), 4 Carling Cup medals.

Liam Miller

Born in Cork. Signed on free transfer from Celtic in 2004. Debut August 11, 2004 away to Dinamo Bucharest in the Champions League. 22 appearances, 11 as sub. 2 goals. Moved to Sunderland in summer 2006.

Darron Gibson

Derry-born Ireland international. Signed as schoolboy. Debut October 26, 2005 v Barnet (League Cup). Appearances 58, 23 as sub, 10 goals . One Premier League medal (2011), two Carling Cups.
