RAFA BENITEZ last night claimed he could not have broken a non-poaching agreement with Liverpool because he is not involved in Inter Milan's transfer dealings. "I am the coach and the coach can't sign any players,'' Benitez said, WRITES HENRY WINTER.
The Spaniard's stance may be construed as disingenuous at Liverpool, who are aggrieved at Inter's pursuit of Dirk Kuyt and Javier Mascherano. Roy Hodgson hit out at Benitez's perceived role in unsettling the players
"I am the coach," said Benitez, whose side face Atletico Madrid here in the Uefa Super Cup this evening. "We have a technical director (Marco Branca) and a chairman/president (Massimo Moratti) and they have a very good relationship with Roy Hodgson. So, it is a problem for them. I don't need to be involved."
Kuyt insisted he hopes to remain at Anfield after last night's game.
"As far as I know my future is at Liverpool," he said. "I hope my future will be great here. All I want is to win trophies with Liverpool."
