WHEN DID MANCHESTER UNITED
LAST FAIL TO REACH A CUP FINAL?
Manchester United aren't usually eliminated from every cup competition by the middle of March even though, this year, they were in four of them rather than the usual three because of dropping into the Europa League.
United's dominance of the Premier League is well documented but their records in reaching cup finals is remarkable, although Bilbao's destruction of United in the two legs means that United can't appear in a cup final this year for the first time since 2002.
In the past nine seasons, United have had a cup final to look forward to, with the League Cup the most popular with three wins (2010, 2009, 2006) and a defeat in 2003.
United have also reached three Champions League finals (2008, 2009, 2011) and three FA Cup (2007, 2005, 2004) in the past nine years.
United failed to reach a cup final for third consecutive year in 2002, although the glow from the treble-winning team of 1999 as well as Premier League titles in 2000 and 2001 certainly softened the blow of missing out on finals during that period.
