Van Gaal’s failure to secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification for United may well trigger his departure from the club, with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho strongly tipped to replace him this summer.

Mourinho has stated that he expects to return to work on July 1st and has made no secret of his desire to manage United, with the outcome of our survey suggesting he would arrive at Old Trafford on a wave of huge popular support.

Suggestions that some United fans have reservations over the firebrand Mourinho arriving at Old Trafford have been aired, yet these statistics suggest opposition towards the Portuguese tactician is melting.

Meanwhile, the voices of opposition to Mourinho’s appointment as Man Utd boss from the club’s hierarchy have been silent in recent weeks, with the campaign to see United great Ryan Giggs succeed Van Gaal that was led by United legends Bryan Robson, Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke suddenly muted.

There have been suggestions that former United manager and influential director Alex Ferguson is among those opposing Mourinho's appointment at Old Trafford, yet this video from a couple of years back confirms he has always had a lot of admiration for his old adversary.

So it seems increasingly likely that Mourinho will be sweeping into power at Old Trafford sooner rather than later, with this Twitter poll offering the two-time Champions League winning coach a resounding vote of confidence if he is to make a high profile arrival at the Theatre of Dreams:
