Pochettino targets Arteta
Mauricio Pochettino wants Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta to make the short journey across north London to join his Tottenham Hotspur coaching staff.
Pochettino faces competition from Pep Guardiola, the incoming manager at Manchester City, to hand Arteta a coaching position and Arsenal are in real danger of losing the midfielder to one of their Premier League rivals.
Arteta's playing contract at Arsenal expires at the end of the season and the 34-year-old is yet to decide whether he wants to keep playing or move into coaching. Pochettino and Guardiola are believed to have made Arteta attractive proposals while Arsenal drag their feet.
Both managers may even consider giving Arteta an initial player-coach role if the midfielder does not want to fully hang up his boots this summer.
The direct approaches of Pochettino and Guardiola are in stark contrast to Arsenal's handling of the situation, with no more than casual conversations being held at the Emirates over what Arteta may do next.
Arteta is highly regarded at Arsenal and many insiders expect the former Everton man to make a successful move into coaching, but manager Arsène Wenger is yet to show any inclination to give him a role on his first-team staff.
Losing Arteta to Tottenham would be a bitter blow to Arsenal fans, although it remains to be seen whether he would be prepared to make such a controversial move after playing at the Emirates for the last five years.
