Beating the champions one week, floundering at home to Stoke City the next. Such is life these days for Watford, who produced an insipid showing at Vicarage Road.

A own goal by Heurelho Gomes proved to be the winner, but Stoke had more than enough opportunities to have extended their lead and rarely looked troubled by Watford's stuttering attack, even when they were forced to weather a late storm.

To add to the Hornets' woe, Miguel Britos was given his marching orders after being shown the yellow card for the second time fo needlessly pulling back the impish Xherdan Shaqiri.

The goal came on 29 minutes when Shaqiri's inswinging corner found the head of the excellent Charlie Adam, whose effort struck the foot of a post before bouncing in off the hapless Gomes.
