IRELAND midfielder David Meyler is expected to return to relegation-threatened Sunderland ahead of the Christmas programme of games, having spent the last month on loan at Hull City.
Black Cats manager Martin O'Neill has spoken to Hull boss Steve Bruce about bringing the 23-year-old back to the Stadium of Light as he deals with a shortage of midfielders.
Injuries to captain Lee Cattermole and defender Phil Bardsley means that the ex-Northern Irish international needs more options and he described bringing Meyler back as a "certainty."
"I'm thinking about recalling David Meyler for our Christmas programme," O'Neill said.
"In fact, that looks like being a certainty. I've spoken to Steve Bruce about it and he understands the situation.
"He knows we're having a look at it and he appreciates the position," the former Celtic boss added.
The Tigers, meanwhile, are reported to be considering making a bid to sign Ireland winger Robbie Brady, who is currenly on-loan from Manchester United.
The 20-year-old is in impressive form for the promotion-chasing Championship club, who would have to pay an initial £2m for his services.
Brady is due to return to Old Trafford next month.
