One of Xabi Alonso's three career regrets on retirement will be very familiar for Liverpool fans
Xabi Alonso has revealed that one of his three regrets from his football career is failing to win a Premier League title during his spell with Liverpool.
The legendary midfielder is calling time on his illustrious career after this weekend's Bundesliga finale against Freiburg, with Alonso set to win his third straight league title since joining Bayern Munich.
Ahead of his football farewell, Alonso spoke to Matt Dickinson in The Times, revealing his three regrets after a career full of trophies.
Liverpool fans will no doubt share similar feelings to Alonso, who won the European Cup while at Anfield but wasn't able to land a Premier League title.
"Maybe I have three [regrets]," Alonso said.
"With Real Sociedad, my club, were one game from winning La Liga [in 2002-03]. With Liverpool we were so close to the Premier League. With Bayern Munich, so close to the Champions League. But maybe that would be too much to ask, too perfect. If you can call them regrets... but that's just football."
Despite those misses, Alonso finishes his career with a La Liga medal and two Champions League wins to add to the aforementioned Bundesliga titles, while at international level with Spain, the midfielder won a World Cup and two European championships.
