NERVOUS Jose Mourinho has instructed his agent Jorge Mendes to meet with Ed Woodward and seek firm guarantees about his chances of becoming the next Manchester United boss.

Mendes hopes to sit down with Woodward in the next few days for what could well prove to be a pivotal meeting.

With an increasingly bullish Louis van Gaal adamant that he is fully involved in transfer planning for the summer and settling in for the long-haul, Mourinho is seeking clarity and reassurance that there will be a vacant position in June.

Mourinho confirmed that he is ready to take up a new position in July and this was widely interpreted as the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford.

He believes he has a gentleman’s agreement to take over from Van Gaal but reports in Holland over the weekend, and again yesterday, suggest that Woodward and the United board have decided to leave Van Gaal in place despite widespread supporter unease at the prospect.

Recent polls in Manchester backed Mourinho to take over from Van Gaal rather than club favourite Ryan Giggs.
