Mesut Ozil reacted furiously at White Hart lane when asked to do another drug test
Mesut Ozil said farewell to White Hart Lane by taking his Arsenal frustration out on a door in the aftermath of the final north London derby to be played at Tottenham Hotspur’s traditional home.
While Ozil failed to make an impact on the pitch during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat, the German made his mark off it amid growing doubts over his future.
Ozil reacted furiously to being told he must take a drugs test after Tottenham’s comfortable victory and initially attempted to refuse to go through the timely procedure.
Witnesses claim that after being told he could be fined, Ozil kicked a door in frustration, leaving his stud marks on it, before begrudgingly agreeing to be tested.
It is understood that Ozil was unhappy with the number of times he has been nominated for drugs testing this season, although his anger also points towards a wider frustration.
Ozil is yet to sign a new contract at Arsenal and the saga appears to have had an impact on his performances with the Tottenham defeat the latest in a line of poor displays.
Fenerbahce are the only team to have shown a real interest in trying to sign Ozil in the summer.
Sources close to Arsenal have told Telegraph Sport for some time that the club would listen to offers for Ozil while they fight to try to keep their other star contract rebel Alexis Sanchez.
With interest apparently thin on the ground and his performances well off their best, Arsenal could well attempt to call Ozil’s bluff by refusing to increase their last contract offer which the 28-year-old stalled over.
Ozil has claimed that he wants to know whether or not manager Arsene Wenger is staying before making a decision on his future and is desperate for Arsenal to be competitive.
The growing prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification will have done nothing to ease Ozil’s fears even though Wenger wants to stay on.
Chelsea and Manchester City are both lining up bids for Sanchez, despite Wenger insisting the Chile forward will not be sold to a Premier League rival.
It is understood that Sanchez has put Chelsea top of his list of potential destinations should he leave Arsenal at the end of the season as he is settled in London and is attracted to the style of head coach Antonio Conte.
Arsenal are fighting with Chelsea and Liverpool for the signing of Southampton central defender Virgil van Dijk, although failure to qualify for the Champions League would put them at a significant disadvantage.
The apparent willingness of the Arsenal board to allow Wenger to stay beyond this season has shocked some of the club’s Premier League rivals.
Boardroom sources at clubs in direct competition with Arsenal have expressed their surprise that Wenger would be allowed to dictate his own destiny.
For the first time in 22 years, Arsenal will finish the season behind rivals Tottenham with a 17-point gap opening up between the two clubs.
More than one insider has told Telegraph Sport that, while the Frenchman is greatly respected for his past achievements, they believe Arsenal will fall even further off the pace in forthcoming years if Wenger remains in charge.
