Mata, along with new signings Eden Hazard and Oscar, has come to epitomise the new approach that manager Roberto di Matteo is trying to implement and the Spain forward believes that Chelsea are a significantly different team this season.
"Last year we won the Champions League and FA Cup playing as we played," said Mata. "Now I think we can do it better, playing even better, with Oscar, Hazard or whoever. I want to improve. I feel I can still do better."
Chelsea won 4-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night against Nordsjaelland, although three of their goals came in the final 11 minutes, with Mata scoring twice.
"I think we're playing like a mature team," Mata said. "In Denmark it wasn't the best game but we won 4-0."
David Luiz's wonderful free-kick against Nordsjaelland has also provoked a debate about the best dead-ball specialist in the Chelsea team.
Mata said that free-kicks would be rotated between himself, Luiz, Hazard and Frank Lampard depending on where on the pitch they are awarded.
Luiz, having just extended his contract, is also loving life at Chelsea. "I'm excited with the team," he said. "I love this club and I love to play for Chelsea." (© Daily Telegraph, London)
