Manchester United fans have been growing increasingly frustrated with the second-rate performances of club captain Wayne Rooney in the last few months - and now a massive 91pc of supporters have called for him to be taken out of the first team line-up.

Rooney’s woeful display in United’s 3-1 defeat at Watford last weekend sparked a few round of criticism for the veteran skipper, with his presence in the United side viewed by as an obstacle for progress as world record signing Paul Pogba is being a chance to influence the game in a more advanced position.

Resolving the Rooney issue is one of the most pressing matters in an increasingly over-crowded in-tray for manager Jose Mourinho, who is already fighting fires from a variety of sources just a few weeks into his reign as United manager.

Mourinho has insisted he would have “no problem” taking Rooney out of his side and it will be intriguing to see his team selection for next Saturday’s crucial game against reigning champions Leicester, where a win will be needed to keep pace with runway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

If the results of our online poll are any gauge, United fans are keen to have Rooney involved in the United set-up for the rest of this season at least, even if a huge majority believe the time is right for him to be taken out of the starting line-up.

Our survey may come as something of a surprise, as most United fans appear to have been suggesting Rooney should be removed from the club entirely after his persistently disappointing displays over the last year and more.

Yet with Rooney just three goals shy of Bobby Chartlon’s all-time United scoring record, he may well be given a chance to stay in Mourinho’s team for now. However, the debate continues over how much longer United can persist with a player whose diluted talents appear to be hampering a side that is struggling to find a winning formula under Mourinho.
