The six year old son of Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney is already trying to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Kai Rooney has been training with United’s development squad for the past few months along with midfielder Michael Carrick’s son, Jacey.

Premier League clubs cannot formally sign players until they are nine but Kai has been busy attending training sessions at United’s old Cliff training ground in Salford along with dozens of other young kids.

Rooney and Carrick are often spotted taking their children to practice and sometimes share lifts.

The best youngsters are taken on two-year scholarships at 16 and can then be handed professional deals at 17 or 18 if they are considered good enough.

Kai’s first few months at United come at a time when his dad’s position for club and country are under intense scrutiny.

Rooney has lost his place in Jose Mourinho’s side and is also expected to be on the substitutes’ bench for England’s World Cup qualifying match against Slovenia tomorrow, which will be interim manager Gareth Southgate’s second game in charge.
