Watch: Wayne Rooney given incredible reception from Old Trafford prior to testimonial

If there were any lingering doubts as to the regard in which Wayne Rooney is held by the Manchester United faithful, they were swiftly extinguished as he walked out on the Old Trafford turf for his testimonial with Everton to a rapturous applause.

For those of a certain era, it is near impossible to believe that Rooney has reached a stage in his career when a testimonial is warranted.

The 16-year-old who stunned Arsenal in 2002 is no more, as is the Manchester United debutant who netted a stunning hat trick against Fenerbahce two years later.

This evening he was awarded a guard of honour and, as he strode out into the Theatre of Dreams with his three sons, the United skipper was also gifted a seismic reception.
