Jose Mourinho may not have to look far to uncover why his Manchester United dream is already hitting the rocks a little over a month into the new season.

  • Go To

Mourinho swept into the United hot-seat carried on a wave of optimism back in June, as he replaced the unpopular Louis van Gaal and promised to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

While reports suggesting he is already under pressure following defeats against Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford in recent days must be more than a little premature, there is a growing concern that his team of superstars are lacking direction and a set of statistics may suggest they are also coming up short in the commitment stakes.

Premier League clubs tend to be a little obsessed with statistics that may be of little or no relevance to the outcome of a game and many (bizarrely) even sign players based entered on statistical data, with the old-school idea of scouting players before you sign them outdated for some.

Yet Mourinho has to be a little alarmed when he casts an eye over the statistics looking at distance covered by Premier League teams in the opening five games of the season, with his United side ROCK BOTTOM of that table.

These statistics back up a perception that United are being outworked by their opponents, as they look to star names such as Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney to produce a moment of magic to win a game.

The debate over Mourinho's team selections, his abrasive management style or his alarming slump in fortune over the last year can be put to one side as this table suggests the players he has under his wing at United are just not working hard to win matches right now.
