Paul Pogba used his Instagram account to claim his decision to leave Manchester United in 2012 was “a mutual decision between the club and me”, as he aimed to play down the acrimonious split that led to his move to Juventus.
United received a small compensation fee for agreeing to allow Pogba to move to Juventus, with the Frenchman now returning to Old Trafford for a world record €100m after one of the most talked about transfers in football history.
Pogba declared himself delighted to be back at United following late night confirmation of his transfer, with his comments now so very different from the words he offered up when he left United four years ago.
At the time that he left United, Back then, Pogba was frustrated with the lack of playing time being offered to him by boss Alex Ferguson, while a contract dispute sparked by a confrontation between the United boss and the players agent Mino Raoila led to a less than cordial parting of the ways.
Leaving Manchester when I was 18 was a mutual decision between the club and me and the right thing to do at that moment. Now it's time to go back and forward, Old Trafford here I come!
“I didn't want to sign a contract as Ferguson didn't play me, even though there were no midfielders there,” said Pogba at the time.
“He obviously thought I didn't deserve the contract I asked for, and didn't put me in the team even though he had no midfield players. It was his choice.
“United were short of players like me, but it was the manager's decision. I couldn't do anything about it. I was frustrated because he spoke to me a few times and said I was nearly there.
“I told him 'If I don't play then I can't get any experience and see how far I have to go'. I played a few cup games but he didn't want to give me a contract and they just let me go.”
The decision of Paul Scholes to come out of retirement and return to the United first team convinced Pogba to move on, as he offered this parting shot:
"When I saw Scholes come back part of me was really happy as he's a legend, but I knew it was the end of me. The manager thought Scholes had to play, not me, and after that I had to leave.
“Maybe Ferguson will regret it now, but I don't think about Manchester United any more. I have no regrets about leaving Manchester, none at all."
Pogba’s words on his return to Manchester were predictably different and he will now get his chance to confirm he is worth the vast sum of cash United have paid to correct their mistake of allowing him to leave in the first place.
The hype and the speculation is now over….Paul Pogba now has to prove he deserves to be known as the most expensive player in world football.
