The 27-year-old Armenian playmaker arrives from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £26.5m on a four-year deal with the option of a further year.

Following Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimović, the dynamic attacker is the latest addition to the Mourinho project as he seeks to rebuild the club after the indifferent tenures of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho has a wish list of four players, with Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba reported to be the final piece in the jigsaw.

However, Real Madrid are said to be the Frenchman’s first choice, and United will have to outbid the Spanish giants for his services, as well as offering him a reputed £240k a week.

That Pogba shares an agent with Ibrahimović and Mkhitaryan should bode well for the Red Devils.

For now, United have fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at the arrival of Mkhitaryan, who contributed 18 goals and 15 assists to Dortmund’s cause last season.
