The 27-year-old midfielder sustained an injury whilst representing Armenia on international duty last week.

Mkhitaryan went down under a heavy challenge during Armenia's 3-0 defeat to Czech Republic.

The Armenian FA released a statement indicating they expected the former Borussia Dortmund star to face "a week and 10 days" on the sidelines.

“Mkhitaryan has had a medical examination in a clinic in Mlada Boleslav. Unfortunately, the results are not encouraging," the statement read.

“Mkhitaryan was found to have an injury in the lower third of the left thigh muscle."

However Mkhitaryan has returned to Manchester to give himself the best chance of being passed fit for United's derby clash with Manchester City on Saturday.

The Armenian posted a message to his fans on his Instagram account updating them on his rehabilitation.

"I continue extensively my rehabilitation, but I'm not sure yet if I will be fit for the derby this weekend," Mkhitaryan wrote.

"I'm motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy to be in great shape as soon as possible."

Manchester United's £25m signing is yet to make a Premier League start under Jose Mourinho since arriving from Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.

Jose Mourinho's side have been boosted by the news that Manchester City will be without Sergio Aguero after the Argentinian striker was charged for an alleged elbow on West Ham's Winston Reid.
