Jose Mourinho's preparations for the Manchester derby have been dealt a blow by the news that Henrikh Mkhitaryan could miss the game through injury.
The 27-year-old midfielder sustained an injury whilst representing Armenia on international duty last week.
Mkhitaryan went down under a heavy challenge during Armenia's 3-0 defeat to Czech Republic.
The Armenian FA released a statement indicating they expected the former Borussia Dortmund star to face "a week and 10 days" on the sidelines.
My dear fans, I appreciate much that you worry about me, thank you! I'm now back in Manchester for treatment and hope to be fit very soon!— Henrikh Mkhitaryan (@HenrikhMkh) September 3, 2016
“Mkhitaryan has had a medical examination in a clinic in Mlada Boleslav. Unfortunately, the results are not encouraging," the statement read.
“Mkhitaryan was found to have an injury in the lower third of the left thigh muscle."
However Mkhitaryan has returned to Manchester to give himself the best chance of being passed fit for United's derby clash with Manchester City on Saturday.
The Armenian posted a message to his fans on his Instagram account updating them on his rehabilitation.
We win & lose together..I'm very disappointed to have missed the game vs Denmark, but I'd like to thank the team for their hard work. I continue extensively my rehabilitation, but I'm not sure yet if I will be fit for the derby this weekend. I'm motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy to be in great shape as soon as possible...a simple devotion to what I love most - football! Thanks for sending me your love & support.

Manchester United's £25m signing is yet to make a Premier League start under Jose Mourinho since arriving from Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.
Jose Mourinho's side have been boosted by the news that Manchester City will be without Sergio Aguero after the Argentinian striker was charged for an alleged elbow on West Ham's Winston Reid.
