David de Gea’s relationship with Louis van Gaal is growing increasingly fractious after it emerged he is training with Manchester United’s reserves.
De Gea’s future at Old Trafford appears bleak with sources close to the Spanish goalkeeper contradicting Van Gaal’s claim that he refused to play in the games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
The 24-year-old is understood to be “seething” over his treatment and was not allowed to travel with the squad to Villa Park on Friday night.
Van Gaal has allegedly ordered him to train with the reserves for the last two days as the uncertainty over the United goalkeeper’s future rages on.
Real Madrid are still keen to sign De Gea before the transfer window closes on Sept 1 and sources in Spain suggest there remains a strong conviction that a deal can be done.
United turned down an ambitious opening offer of £20 million from Real last month and have been encouraged by the lack of contact from the Spanish giants in recent weeks.
But Real may still return with an improved offer in the next fortnight, though United have insisted it will require an “extraordinary” bid to convince them to sell.
