'Chelsea are very good defensive team' - Jose Mourinho with a cheeky dig at his old players

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho couldn’t resist a cheeky verbal jab at his former club Chelsea after his side’s 2-0 win against Watford, as he claimed they are on course to win the Premier League title are a ‘very good defensive team’.

Mourinho has been lambasted for playing negative football designed to dilute attack minded teams on numerous occasions his decorated career, with his critics questioning whether he could change his philosophy when he took over from Louis van Gaal as United manager last summer.

The negative approach deployed by United in their 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield in October produced days of abuse for Mourinho, yet he appeared to hint that those tactics after the best route to success after United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to 16 games against Watford.

“Before I got the job they were saying at Manchester United you need to play the football in a certain way and I agree totally,” stated Mourinho in an interview quoted by the BBC.

“You cannot play like some successful teams in the Premier League, but they play with a completely different style. We have to play attacking football and then to be humble and analyse the match.

“Chelsea are very good defensive team. They defend very well and with lots of players and I think in this situation a very defensive team wins the title with counterattack goals and set pieces goals so I don't think they will let it slip, but football is football.”

Mourinho also offered up these comments to MUTV, as he described his side’s display in their win against Watford as ‘amazing’.

Despite Mourinho's comments that Chelsea favour defensive tactics, they have scored 13 more goals than United so far this season and currently have an 11 point lead on the Old Trafford giants heading into their game against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.
