Jose Mourinho has made wholesale changes to the Manchester United side to face Northampton in the EFL Cup tonight, including the omission of world record signing Paul Pogba from the entire squad.

Having sustained three successive defeats, Mourinho has made radical adjustments to his team as they look to bounce back from a deflating week.

However, he has retained Wayne Rooney, while Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimović must make do with a place on the bench.

Michael Carrick has been handed his first start of the season in midfield alongside Morgan Schneiderlin, while Memphis Depay, Ashley Young, Ander Herrera  and Rooney comprise the front four.

Sergio Romero replaces David De Gea in goal, with Tim Fosu-Mensah and Marcos Rojo positioned at right and left back respectively. Luke Shaw has seemingly paid the price for his performance at Watford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also nowhere to be seen.

Daley Blind and Chris Smalling have been chosed as the centre-half pairing, with Eric Bailly also left out of the group.

It is the first time in the competitive season that Mourinho has not selected one of his four summer signings. Kick off is at 7 45pm
