The Old Trafford club have been keeping tabs on midfielder Tielemans for over a year and Van Gaal is reported to have stepped up his interest in the youngster.

With both Bastien Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick in the twilight of their careers, the Anderlecht starlet has emerged as the perfect replacement.

A quick, skillful and strong holding midfielder with an eye for goal, the level headed 18-year-old has three seasons worth of Champions League and Belgian pro League experience on his CV already.

Tielemans’ rapid rise at Anderlecht has attracted the attentions of a host of Europe's top sides.

Tielemans became the third youngest player ever to feature in the Champions League when just 16, while he is already an established Under-21 international.

Tielemans is a first team regular at Anderlecht and has produced an array of eye-watering performances for the Belgian outfit.

But United face competition from rivals City with the Daily Star reporting that a £30million fight for Tielemans' signature is on the cards with City also interested.
