Manchester United will offer Javier Hernandez as part of a deal to secure the signing of Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne, according to reports.
United are one of several clubs said to be interested in the right-back and Louis van Gaal could offer outcast Hernandez as a makeweight in the deal.
The Mexico striker has spent the season on loan at Real Madrid, but has struggled to secure regular game time under Carlo Ancelotti.
Clyne’s current Southampton deal expires next summer.
Meanwhile, former Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong is ready to accept a move to their fierce rivals United this summer.
De Jong, who will be a free agent this summer when his AC Milan contract expires, has offers from Juventus, Roma, Sevilla and teams in MLS, but reports say he would prefer to join United.
Van Gaal would have to meet his £80,000-a-week salary demands.
United have also been linked with a £37m double offer for Paris St-Germain pair Thiago Silva and Gregory van der Wiel.
According to Spanish sources, Louis van Gaal has identified the duo as the perfect candidates to bolster his defensive options.
However, Van der Wiel only this week said he was happy to stay at the the Parisian club.
