Louis van Gaal has warned his Manchester United players that every position at the club is under threat - including his own.

United manager Van Gaal has displayed a ruthless streak this summer by selling Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce and revealing that goalkeeper Victor Valdes, omitted from the squad for the pre-season tour of the United States, will be sold following his refusal to play in a reserve team game last season.

With United spending over £75million on new signings Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin this summer, Van Gaal insists that he has intensified competition for places at Old Trafford.

But the Dutchman admits that neither he nor his players can be certain of their future at the club unless they succeed this season.

“Every player who is sitting here can make a contribution, but they know already,” Van Gaal said. “I have to say to the players, you have to fight for your position.

“Never is it secure in top sport, even my position is not secure as you know.

"But the players, they have to fight. Morgan Schneiderlin has to fight with Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick and Daley Blind because these are the players who can play in the centre of midfield.

“Matteo Darmian has to fight with (Antonio) Valencia. He knows that, but Valencia knows that also. Michael Carrick knows it also. At the end of the season I have told him that, but the difficulty is to get these players, it is not so easy.

“But I am very proud that (executive vice-chairman) Ed Woodward has done that. It is not so easy when Manchester United is coming because clubs are always asking more money than you think you should spend.”

Van Gaal claims that the addition of Southampton midfielder Schneiderlin and Torino right-back Darmian has solved two positional problems for United.

“Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders.

“And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy.

“Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.

“And with Darmian, I want always a player who can defend in the first place because when you are right full-back, you have to defend and cooperate with your fellow defenders.

“What I have seen in him is that he has a very good orientation and with that he can cooperate with our central defenders.

“He is also fast and is a reasonable header so that is also a plus. He can build up and he can see a free man and he is in an attacking way a good player.

“Manchester United wants to attack with the full-backs. It is always in theory.”
