Louis van Gaal has struck back at former Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria after criticism from the Argentine.

The winger lasted just a season after Old Trafford following a British record £59.7million move in the summer of 2014 - he managed only four goals and 11 assists before being sold to Paris Saint-Germain before the start of this season.

With the French club Di Maria has rediscovered his brilliant form, scoring 13 goals and adding 13 assists on the way to the Ligue 1 title and a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Speaking about his exit from the club, Di Maria said he wanted to "win things" but also criticised the Dutchman.

"I started a game in a position, and then the next one I would be in another," he told BBC Sport's Football Focus.

"I scored goals playing in one position, and then suddenly the next game I was picked to play in a different position."

Van Gaal, however, hit back at a press conference, stating that Di Maria needs to look closer to home.

"I have never seen (many) players who looks at himself, who looks to the way they have performed here and that is always the fault of the manager," Van Gaal said.

"So he is one of the players who are in the row of players who have no self-criticism and, unfortunately, it is also my life as a manager. It is always like that."
