Liverpool's £15m Downing bid

kenny dalglish looks set to maintain his policy of snapping up English talent as Liverpool last night reportedly made a £15million offer for Aston Villa's Stewart Downing.
Having spent £35m on Andy Carroll in January and a further £20m on Sunderland's Jordan Henderson this summer, Dalglish has now set his sights on the 26-year-old winger.
However, having sold Ashley Young to Manchester United, it remains to be seen whether Villa are willing to accept such an offer, although new manager Alex McLeish had previously admitted that he may struggling to keep hold of the former Middlesboro player.
It was also revealed yesterday that Steven Gerrard will not be risked captain for the club's forthcoming pre-season friendlies in the Far East.
Though results were positive from a scan Gerrard underwent last week on his groin, Liverpool continue to exercise caution. Gerrard has struggled with groin injuries over the past two seasons.
"I'm sure there will be supporters disappointed that Steven is unable to be with us in Asia but I'm sure the same people will appreciate the importance of Steven giving himself the best possible opportunity of being fit to play against Sunderland on the opening day of the new campaign," said Dalglish.
Liverpool play Guangdong in China next Wednesday, and a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur on July 16 before hosting a training session in Singapore the following evening.
