Liverpool want to cancel the loan contract of Spanish full-back Javier Manquillo a year early.

Manquillo, a 21-year-old right-back, was signed from Atletico Madrid on a two year, temporary deal last summer. He began last season in the starting line-up but failed to convince manager Brendan Rodgers of his long-term credentials at Anfield.

With Nathaniel Clyne recruited for £12.5 million, Rodgers sees no prospect of Manquillo forcing his way into his plans in the year ahead and Liverpool believe it is in his best interests to return to Madrid. That will require further negotiation with his parent club.

Liverpool expect the recruitment of England Under 19 coach Sean O’Driscoll to be finalised by Monday and he will be in place for the start of pre-season training next week. O’Driscoll has informed the Football Association of his desire to move to Anfield after less than a year working at St George’s Park.

O’Driscoll will join Pepijn Ljinders as part of Rodgers’ new look backroom team, although the Liverpool manager hopes to make one more addition to his staff.
