Liverpool table €37m bid for Chelsea target Alex Teixeira
According to reports Liverpool are sending representatives to Florida to open talks with Shakhtar Donetsk about the purchase of Brazilian forward Alex Teixeira.
Chelsea are also thought to be admirers of the 26-year-old Teixeira, though in hopes of bolstering their offensive threat, Liverpool have deployed Chief Executive Ian Ayre to Orlando in a bid to secure the attacker's services.
Shakhtar are currently playing a tournament in Florida and are said to be willing to offload Teixeira for a fee of around €37m.
According to reports in the Times and the Guardian, chief executive Ayre has flown out to the United States of America to clinch a deal which would see Liverpool dramatically sidestep Chelsea in the transfer market.
Here is a taste of what Teixeira is capable of:
Teixeira has scored 67 goals in 146 appearances for Shakhtar across a five-year spell. Belgium international Christian Benteke, meanwhile, is the Reds’ top goalscorer this season with six strikes to his name.
"If there is an offer that will satisfy both player and the club I will fully support his move," said Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu recently.
"At the moment, Alex is Shakhtar's player. We'll see in the summer, now there's no point talking about it. This year, he needs to play so that he grows even more, despite the fact that Alex's level is very high even today.
"I want to see my players perform in the best, top teams in Europe. This means that both my assistants and I have not been working in vain for so many years.
"We signed players, who were 17-19, and brought them to the level of the top clubs. I wonder how many coaches in Europe are working based on such a scheme?"
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Southampton’s Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long, but little developments have occurred since rumours of the deal first began circulating.
Were Teixeira to move to Anfield, he would join a considerable number of his compatriots including Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva.
Liverpool beat Exeter by 3-0 in their FA Cup Replay last night, which was just their third win in nine games.
