Jose Mourinho has rowed back on the biggest compliment he ever paid Cristiano Ronaldo

The discussion about who is the best footballer ever is always changing.

The list of legends grows each year as new players do enough to elbow their way into the conversation, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo undoubtedly doing enough in their careers to be mainstays in any such conversation.

The Real Madrid and Barcelona duo are constantly compared, with Ronaldo getting a slight edge on Messi in the eyes of some after leading Portugal to Euro 2016 glory earlier this month.

One of Ronaldo's compatriots had previously been on the regard extolling his virtues over the Argentine but it appears that Jose Mourinho has changed his mind.

According to Spanish paper Sport, Mourinho has now given his top three players of all-time as Messi, Pele and Diego Maradona.

The Man United manager's son, Jose Mourinho Jr, has since retweeted the quote, giving it even more credence.

In fairness to Mourinho, his initial comments picking Ronaldo over Messi were made when he was the Real Madrid manager in 2013, so he may have been trying to keep his star man onside at the time.
