And former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher couldn't resist having one last dig at the Dutchman.

"LVG I'll miss you! His best moments, all off the pitch to be fair!!," tweeted Carragher.

Here is some of the other Twitter reaction.

"LVG gone.... Mourinho to be announced next?! #MUFC" - Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5)

"If and when Mourinho takes over lets get one thing straight. Goals won't be an issue. Far to many lazy stories about parking bus. Rubbish !!" - Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05)

"Crikey! Manchester United have sacked Louis Van Gaal. Who saw that coming? Next thing you know they'll appoint Jose Mourinho." - Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker)

"#mufc handled LVG departure tackily but exit was inevitable. Pedestrian football, players looked confused and he failed to qualify for top 4" - Henry Winter (@henrywinter)

"People asking me if I want Jose...Jose or LVG. Only one winner. Jose brings success. Will put the club back to where it was." - Andy Goldstein (andygoldstein05)

"Contrast seems stark between dignified, respectful, professional way City handled Pelligrini's replacement & the way of LVG's Utd departure" - Jake Humphrey (@mrjakehumphrey)

"The club has moved backwards in terms of its philosophy and traditions. I have to praise the owners and the leadership of the club to make this decision." - Peter Schmeichel (@Pschmeichel1 via BBC Radio Five Live)
