Joey Barton has delivered some harsh criticism towards Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, claiming that the German isn't a top Premier League manager.

Liverpool started their Premier League season in disappointing fashion earlier today, letting a 3-2 lead slip in injury time away to Watford to come away with a draw. Klopp has come under some criticism for the slow pace of the club's transfer dealings this summer, and speaking to Talksport ahead of today's game, Barton fired a few broadsides his way.

"He is not trophy-laden like Mourinho or Guardiola, so we have to be sceptical of him," Barton said.

"He has gone in with all this charisma and seems a down to earth, nice guy, but I always worry when I see him prancing up and down the touchline. He is like a giant German cheerleader for them.

"To be a top manager, you have got to have more than that. He has got a terrible record in finals.

"I'm not buying the Klopp aura and that he is this super coach. His career doesn't point that way.

"His Dortmund career ended in a hole in the ground. He lost the players, he lost the dressing room. They were fighting relegation."

Liverpool are back in action this Tuesday, travelling to Germany to take on Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League playoff.
