Has Jose Mourinho made a 'deal clinching' offer to Manchester United chiefs?
Jose Mourinho wants to hand a Man Utd legend a key role on his coaching staff if he gets the green light to take over at Old Trafford - paving the way for Ryan Giggs or Gary Neville to complete his dream ticket.
Mourinho has moved to placate the voices of resistance by embracing United’s traditions and welcoming one of the club's all-time greats into his inner circle as he plots a future at Old Trafford.
Independent.ie understands that Mourinho’s advisers made the offer to United chiefs in recent days, with the club’s current assistant manager Giggs and recently sacked Valencia boss Neville in the mix for the key role.
“There has clearly been some opposition to Mourinho getting the job at United, but bringing Giggs or Neville in as an assistant would be a bold move,” a source told Independent.ie.
“While Mourinho’s advisers still think he will get the Man Utd job, he wants to join a club where he has the backing of everyone and this move to could silence a few doubters at United.”
Mourinho’s high profile adviser Jorge Mendes was in Manchester earlier this week for meetings with United chiefs, with this proposal believed to have been floated in those discussions.
Giggs has let it be known that he does not want to continue as an assistant to the next United manager if Louis van Gaal is sacked this summer, as he has his sights set on taking over from the Dutchman in his own right.
However, the offer to work alongside the highly decorated Mourinho and continue his enduring association with United might be too tempting to turn down.
Neville’s links with a position in the Mourinho set-up would excite United fans and also encourage senior club officials who remain unconvinced that the former Chelsea boss would uphold the traditions of the club if he takes over.
Giggs is a 13-time Premier League title winner with United and Neville's eight Premier League title wins would ensure that any United fans with reservations over Mourinho's appointment would be swayed if one of their heroes was sat alongside him on the Old Trafford bench.
Mourinho’s established coaching team featuring Rui Faria and Silvino Louro would join him in Manchester, but he is ready to drop an ‘outsider’ into his close knit group as he looks to secure his dream job at United.
Mourinho is now waiting to be given the green light to take on the challenge at United, yet there remains some doubt whether the offer will be made as Van Gaal closes in on FA Cup glory and a top four finish.
Old Trafford insiders strongly deny reports that they have agreed a deal to recruit Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s replacement, with opposition to his appointment still being voiced among the Old Trafford hierarchy.
