Gunners face Shaw fight
Arsenal face intensive competition to sign the Southampton teenage left-back Luke Shaw, with Chelsea and Manchester City both now in the race for the 16-year-old rated as one of the best young prospects in English football.
The Championship club value the player at around £4m -- even though he is yet to make his first team debut.
It is anticipated that Shaw, who was on the bench for Nigel Adkins' side for their 2-1 win over Coventry City, will be watched by all the Premier League's leading clubs when he plays for Southampton U-18s in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup against Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium tonight. Arsenal have so far been confident of signing the player, having also secured Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the club in the last six years, but there is intense competition for Shaw.
In recent months, Manchester City have proven the most ambitious yet in acquiring young players for their academy system.
They signed 15-year-old Jose Angel Pozo from Spanish giants Real Madrid last month, quite a coup given that they persuaded the striker to leave Spain.
Pozo was also being tracked by Chelsea, who believed that they were close to a deal for the player. (© Independent News Service)
